Gilles de Rais
Gilles de Montmorency-Laval (1404-1440) is considered to be a precursor to the modern serial killer. He was a Breton knight, a leader in the French army who fought alongside Joan of Arc. He was the first recorded serial killer accused and convicted of raping, torturing and ultimately murdering up to 200 children who were mainly boys in the 1430's.
In his youth he was married to an extremely wealthy heiress and lived a life of extravagance and debauchery. When his funds began to dwindle and he could no longer support his lifestyle he turned to alchemy. When that didn’t work, a certain Francisco Prelati who was an Italian priest, suggested that he offer children as human sacrifices to help him plead to a demon called “Baron” to turn common metals to gold.
Rais lured children mainly boys with the promise that all he wanted to do was play with them. Once he got them to his chateau Rais hung his victims with ropes from a hook to prevent the child from crying out loud, then he raped, tortured and masturbated over the child. Afterwards it was either Rais's cousin Gilles de Sillé or Gilles' bodyservants Poitou and Henriet who killed the child. The victims were killed by decapitation, cutting of their throats, dismemberment, or breaking of their necks with a stick. A short, thick, double-edged sword called a braquemard was kept at hand for the murders.
According to Poitou, Rais disdained the victim’s sexual organs, and took “infinitely more pleasure in debauching himself in this manner…than in using their natural orifice, in the normal manner."
In his own confession, Gilles testified that “when the said children were dead, he kissed them and those who had the most handsome limbs and heads he held up to admire them, and had their bodies cruelly cut open and took delight at the sight of their inner organs; and very often when the children were dying he sat on their stomachs and took pleasure in seeing them die and laughed…”(Source)
Rais greatest pleasure of all was weltering in the childrens blood, his servants would stab the child in the jugular vein and let the blood flow over him while he sat in a bathtub.
Some sources say that after Rais murdered a child he would feel so guilty that he would plead and pray to God for forgiveness but while he kneeled and prayed his servants burned the body and clothes of the victim in Rais room in his fireplace and it is said he inhaled these fumes with delight. On 26 October Rais and his accomplices were executioned by hanging and burning.
On my mini-break while writting this blogpost i did this really cool quiz of " What kind of serial killer would you be?" this was my final result:
You're a planner. You'd carefully plot each murder, and carry it out methodically. You'll kill them in one location and move them to another later, and you'll study up your forensic science. The good news is, you're much harder to catch. You'll have a specific reason to kill. You'll target a specific group, like prostitutes or members of a minority, and you'll believe their deaths are justified on the grounds that you're "cleansing" the earth of that particular kind of people. You'll think you're helping society. | |
Uhm WOW okeeey good to know lol! here is the link to that quiz: http://www.gotoquiz.com/what_kind_of_serial_killer_would_you_be
After that i did another "Which famous serial killer are you most like?" quiz, here were my results:
Charles Manson
You are Charles Manson...You are a free spirit who has very strong personal beliefs...You are a very convincing person which is why so many lost souls allowed themselves to be brainwashed by you...You are truly a deranged individual.

Haha! I laughed so hard at the split screen of you and Manson! A "free spirit" hey? Yeah, well that's one way of putting it. :)
ReplyDeleteSo, I took that quiz and here are my results...
Ted Bundy
You are Ted Bundy...You are a good looking, Handsome and clean cut individual which is why so many women fatally allowed themselves to be picked up by you...You are cunning, Very smart and at sometimes cocky, You are a true master of disguise.
I wish I could have shared the photo that went with this, but none of the embed options were working. Oh well. I don't mean to sound sick, but I'm pleased with my result, as these things go. :)
Oh, and before I forget: That French serial killer was incredibly sick. Where did you learn about him? I sometimes feel conflicted about the death penalty, but I was not at all disappointed to read what happened to him!
Great post! I love learning about historical serial killers.
ReplyDeleteI got the quiz and I'm John Wayne Gacy. Ugh.
Wow that's a crazy guy and I don't believe I heard of him before. Most of the serial killer books I've read usually start with Sawney Bean and his clan. I got Ted Bundy too :)
ReplyDelete@ Justine hahaha i knw right when he came up my first words were "Damn! and really that messed up?" hahaha I did like a similar quiz years ago but on facebook and my result came up as Ted Bundy so i dnt knw if that means over the years i have evolved into a better serial killer..I was watching Tv at the time and there was a documentary about "Women who kill" and then out of nowhere i wondered who started all this like who is the baddest and first ever recorded serial killer? and boy was i surprised when i found out abt Rais i trully think he gets the cake for most gruesome serial killer.
ReplyDeleteI thinnk his punishment wasnt enough! they shud have castrated him and then hung n burned him lol
@ Jennifer THANK SOO MUCH!!! and im the same too like most of the time i just immerse myself in books or articles abt serial killers..my parents are a bit concerned tho hahaha
ReplyDeletehahaha u dnt sound too happy abt getting John Wayne Gracey, which serial killer had you hoped for?
@Slowdeath77 believe me i hadnt either bt it was jst a result of curiosity that i found out about him and i thght i had read them ALL bt app not! He was trully deranged and deserved a harsher way to die as mean as tht sounds..
ReplyDeleteSo that means you(Slowdeath77) and Justine have the same amount of evil in you..if life goes wrong you two cu always team up be like batman n robin except you nt save ppl you kidnap and kill them...A duo made in heaven HAHAHAHAHHAA
ReplyDeleteYeah, there ya go. :) The evil dynamic duo! I can't imagine that two Ted Bundys would work well together. I feel like there might be a little competition going.
ReplyDeleteWell, it isn't like there's a non-messed up result to that quiz. :) I felt slightly demented even answering those questions! Hmm...Well, I'm not sure why your results would have changed. I think the major difference is that Manson was more of a cult leader who had other people brainwashed. So maybe you've learned how to get others to do your bidding over the years? ;)
My mother always says that if there have to be serial killers, she wants them to all look like Manson. That way they'd be so noticeably insane, you'd know what to watch out for. Manson has those crazy eyes! In my opinion, Ted Bundy is the most terrifying type of killer. People like that are attractive, charming, and manipulative. They know how to fool others. While looking at that picture of Bundy, I remarked to myself that he looked like a normal, handsome man. Same thing with Dahmer. You'd never know it to look at some people.
Holy Shiite, i can't believe I've never heard of this guy. Just like I couldn't believe I'd never heard of H.H.Holmes and his Murder Palace until they cast Leonardo DiCaprio as him in the adaptation of The Devil in the White City. Is there no end to the sickness of humanity? And why do I find it so entertaining.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of historical murders, I recently looked up Murder in the Red Barn on account of it being a TomWaits song and an old Tod Slaughter movie. Apparently after they tried and executed the culprit, they bound the trial transcripts into a book made from the killer's flesh. How awesome is that? Part of me thinks we should still do that.
Great post! Most Americans don't know much about Gilles De Rais. In France, he is infamous on a level I don't think any American killer ever was. He is part of history and legend.
ReplyDelete@Marvin the Macabre yea it was also my first time reading about him and was surprised it took me this long to find out about his crazy ass lol i actually havent heard of H.H.Holmes either but i will def do some research on that and find out more about him cas he sounds like a iunteresting character. HOLY COW???!! they did waaaaaaat with the transcripts?? wow that is super scary and awesome at the same time and HELL YEA they shud totally stil do that cas nothing sends a better message than a book made from flesh lol
ReplyDelete@Jessica Heya! thank you so much am happy you liked the post and yes i can see why he would b a legend! i think he is beyond evil and the most twisted person i have EVER read about by far!!
