Devil (2010)

Heya! im back again for another movie review, i know its been like 2 weeks i havent posted anything but have been drowning in advanced calculus grrrrrrr :( . In anycase the movie of choice today is Devil directed by John and Drew Dowdle and based on a story by M. Night Shyamalan.

Devil is about five strangers who find themselves stuck in a broken elevator and while stuck there, from time to time the lights flicker off for a few minutes and when they go back on one of strangers dies. Now I'm claustrophobic so from the get go i found this movie scary and the moments when the lights flickered off, i actually found myself holding my breath for fear of how and who would die next. As each stranger gets killed off one by one, confusion and fear of not only the characters in the movie but also of me the viewer increases as we both try to figure out who the killer actually is.

Is the killer one of the five strangers in the elevator? or as the title suggest the actual devil himself? The murders gradually get more elaborate, and with no clear clue as to who the killer is, the scared survivors end up blaming each other and get more paranoid as more people get killed off.

Overall I actually enjoyed this movie, i mean there were parts i thought could've been a little more scarier but other than that it was a good horror movie. What makes this movie scary and good is the tension and the atmosphere and the characters themselves also did a great job. So when you have the time i suggest you pop this in , turn off all the lights, blast up the volume and enjoy!

The Last Exorcism

Hello my horror movie loving lil monsters! today the movie of choice is The Last Exorcism directed by Daniel Stamm. The movie is basically about a documentary crew that follows a fake exorcist named Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) to a remote family farm, where he’s been hired to exorcise the demon possessed teenage daughter (Ashley Bell) of a devout Christian (Louis Herthum). Cotton's reason for coming to the farm and agreeing to the exorcism is to expose exorcism as a scam hence the documentary crew tagging along, but once he arrives at the farm, he starts to doubt whether or not he’s witnessing a real case of demonic possession.

This movie took a rather different approach to other Exorcist movies in that the horror and scare factor other Exorcist movie are known and loved for kind of took a back step. Now i'm not saying the movie is bad its just that its not what i expected and hoped it would be like, i guess i thought that this movie would be equally if not better than The Exorcism of Emily Rose  which i loved. For a movie that was about 88 minutes long, i feel they wasted too much time building up to the actual exorcism and in the end i felt that the movie was mainly about the exorcist Cotton Marcus but maybe that was the approach they wanted to take, its just that coming into the movie i wanted to see and know more about the actual girl who was being exorcised.

I do feel though that Patrick Fabian did a GREAT job portraying the reverend Cotton Marcus and i loved his character who is basically this person who has been preaching since he was 5 years old, now has a change of heart and basically is starting to doubt his relationship with God and the church with concern to exorcisms.

I actually feel the only really scaryish part of this movie is they way the girl snaps her neck and body when she is possessed. I really did wish they would have done more scary possessed scenes because i think it would have made the movie that much better and having watched all the Exorcist movies you can't shoot me for expecting that and being disappointed when  the movie doesn't deliver.

The ending of this movie was particularly mind-boggling and i in fact found it funny, which i don't think the director was going for. To me the ending seemed like production ran out of money but they needed to finish the film so they shot the quickest, cheapest and last minute thought out ending. It also felt like the director and producers morphed movies like (The Exorcist, Rosemary's baby, Blair Witch Project, The Exorcism of Emily Rose etc..) all into the last 5 minutes of the movie as the ending, which made it seem like the directors didn't even try.

In the end this movie was not too bad as it did take a different approach to this horror movie classic but horror wise i feel the best modern version of the 1973 The Exorcist movie is The Exorcism of Emily Rose  but other people might feel differently but at the end of the day the 1973 movie still and i feel will always kick ass!!!

Homecoming

Aaaah Homecoming..the football players, the dance, girlfriends and ex-girlfriends, the jealousy, kidnapping, the gruesome torture and murders...uhmmm doesnt this all sound a little too predictable? well it is! This movie was sooo bad that throughout it I constantly questioned my sanity..

You know Im even pissed writting this review because it was such an epic failure and a waste of good film, so i wont even spend too much time on this one.
In anycase Mischa Barton also stars as one of the main characters in this movie and its really sad to see how she goes from playing an alright character in Walled In  to completely sucking monkey balls in this one. Whats even more mind boggling is that Morgan Freeman produced this!?! Anywho back to the movie, its about a former high school quarterback star Mike Donaldson (Matt Long) who returns to his hometown for the Homecoming retirement of his jersey. To the surprise of his possessive and jealous ex-girlfriend Shelby (Mischa Barton) he brings along his new grilfriend Elizabeth (Jessica Stroup).

After a series of bad events Elizabeth finds herself in the middle of the road looking for a motel to stay in, she "accidentally" gets run over by Shelby. Shelby then takes the unconscious Elizabeth to her almost deserted house, where she hooks her up to an IV shoves her system with a lot of painkillers and uses this situation to her advantage as she tries to win Mike back while Elizabeths fights for her life and tries to escape.

Now if you are as much of a horror movie lover as I am while reading this a light bulb should switch on and a particular movie should come into mind..i.e Misery...Homecoming is basically the modern retarded version of Misery .This movie lacks creativity, the acting just plain sucked and  i think i may have lost a couple of braincells watching this, so for my sanity i'll just end this review here and look for another hopefully better horror movie to watch....
